Responding to the challenge of enabling education system actors to promote inclusive education for children with disabilities, the global facility on inclusive education at the World Bank (Inclusive Education Initiative-IEI) seeks to address the complex task of operationalizing inclusive education in low-income country contexts.
This side session will bring together governments, donors, organizations of persons with disabilities, and practitioners to critically engage in a discussion around the purpose, process, and implementation modalities of IEI and how education actors can be best supported to ensure that no child is left behind, especially during COVID-19. The discussion will focus on:
- Inclusive Education Initiative- Nuts and Bolts: Aligning with the commitment to ensure disability-inclusion of all education projects by 2025, the World Bank will provide an overview of the Inclusive Education Initiative (IEI). The presentation will focus on how the IEI supports countries in inclusive education planning, project financing, resource, and technical assistance, developing knowledge, promoting innovations, and engaging stakeholders to promote inclusive education for children with disabilities. Current and future activities planned under IEI with specific reference to country selection and investments in developing global public goods will also be outlined.
- Operationalizing inclusive education- Country perspectives (Nepal/Rwanda/Ethiopia)- The presentation will focus on IEI focus countries and how the IEI supports ongoing work on inclusive education at the country level. With a specific emphasis on COVID-19, the presentation will highlight critical operational challenges that emerged during COVID-19 to ensure quality equitable education for children with disabilities moving forward.
- COVID-19 and impact on children with disabilities- The presentation will focus on technical assistance by IEI during COVID-19 to address challenges faced by learners with disabilities.
